The above project, titled Unearth is a design for a culinary school and marketplace in Florence, Italy. The design concept is simply to unearth; to expose and make clear the process of food. This includes farming, selling, cooking, and education. Public use of the site is in the base, the negative bar. Here people can purchase food products, socialize, and eat. The private use is within the positive bar above, in which the school is located. Walls are the breadths between the vast spans of the bars. The walls act as the exposed structure of the building while also implying both vertical and horizontal circulation, and social gathering spaces.
Performing Arts University. The design is generated as a play between the solid volume filling the site and the subtracted volume of the central void. The program spaces are organized around the central void, which continually shifts as it rises through the building, allowing natural light to penetrate the floors. A system of stairways act as the primary vertical circulation and put the hollow center into motion as they rotate around it. |
